ASME B16.5 Flange Dimensions: Class 150, 300, 600 and 900

ASME B16.5-2003 flange dimension tables for Class 150, 300, 600 and 900: outside diameter, flange and hub thickness, hub length, thread length, bore and corner radius, NPS 1/2 through NPS 24, all dimensions in inches.

ASME B16.5-2003 flange dimensions in inches

ASME B16.5-2003 covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings. Included are flanges with rating class designations 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500 in sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 24, with requirements given in both metric and U.S. Customary units, with diameter of bolts and flange bolt holes expressed in inch units.

The four tables below are the dimensional tables most often asked for with a flange enquiry: Class 150 (Table F8), Class 300 (Table F11), Class 600 (Table F16) and Class 900 (Table F18). All dimensions are in inches, as printed in the standard. A dash in the table means the standard does not tabulate a value at that size, and a cell reading “To be specified by Purchaser” means the dimension is deliberately left to the purchase order rather than fixed by the standard.

For sizes NPS 26 and larger, ASME B16.47 Series A and Series B apply instead of B16.5.

How to read these tables against a purchase order

Three column groups drive most of the ordering conversation.

  • Outside diameter O and thickness tf are the dimensions a fabricator cuts to. They are fixed by the class and the size, so they are normally not an open item.
  • Length through hub Y is given three ways, because a threaded or slip-on flange, a lapped flange and a welding neck flange each present a different hub length. Quoting the wrong one is the most common cause of a flange that will not mate.
  • Bore B and corner radius r govern the bore geometry. Where the standard says “To be specified by Purchaser”, the bore has to be stated on the order instead.

Flange types covered by each table

Class 150 and Class 300 tables cover the full range of flange types: threaded, slip-on welding, lapped, socket welding (NPS 1/2 to NPS 3 only) and welding neck, together with the blind flange. The Class 600 and Class 900 tables are given for the types that those classes are normally produced in, and their notes point to the companion table for the remaining types.

Material and specification note

These tables are dimensional only. The material specification governs the grade: ASME SB-462 covers forged or rolled nickel alloy pipe flanges, forged fittings and valves for corrosive high-temperature service, and ASME SB-564 covers nickel alloy forgings. ASME SA-182 covers forged ferritic and austenitic alloy steel flanges for general service, and ASME SA-105 covers carbon steel and alloy steel forgings. A flange dimensioned to B16.5 can be made in several different alloys, so the material line on the order has to name the specification and the grade.

Ordering information to send with an enquiry

To get a quotation that matches the flange you need, the enquiry should state:

  1. Nominal pipe size and the class (150, 300, 600, 900 and so on).
  2. Flange type: threaded, slip-on welding, lapped, socket welding or welding neck.
  3. Facing: flat face, raised face, ring type joint, or tongue and groove.
  4. Material specification and grade, for example ASME SB-462 with the grade covering the alloy in question.
  5. Bore dimension, where the table says “To be specified by Purchaser”.
  6. Any dimensional deviation from the standard, stated as a requirement on the purchase order.

Nickel alloy pipe flanges and forged nickel alloy fittings are supplied against the dimensional tables above. For the flange standard boundary at NPS 26 and above, see ASME B16.5 or B16.47: which flange standard applies at what size. For socket weld and threaded fitting dimensions see ASME B16.11 socket weld and threaded fitting dimensions, and for the selection rules between B16.9, B16.11 and MSS SP-43 see stainless fittings: B16.9, B16.11 and MSS SP-43 explained. Nickel alloy flanges in Hastelloy C-276, C-22 and Alloy 2000 are listed under forged flanges and fittings to SB-462, and the flange range is indexed at nickel alloy flanges. Send the size, class, type, facing and material line through the contact page for a quotation.
