Commercially pure Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are supplied as seamless pipe and tube under ASME SB-161 for UNS N02200 and UNS N02201. With 99.0 % minimum nickel, these grades remain the reference material for caustic and chlor-alkali service, and are correct whenever a buyer needs a metal with essentially no alloying additions that can leach into a product stream.

Specification Coverage

SB-161 covers nickel (UNS N02200) and low-carbon nickel (UNS N02201) in the form of cold-worked seamless pipe and tube in the conditions shown in Table 1 and Table X1.1. The two grades differ in carbon content: Nickel 200 permits up to 0.15 % carbon, while Nickel 201 limits carbon to 0.02 % maximum. That single control makes Nickel 201 the preferred grade above approximately 315 °C (600 °F), where carbon in Nickel 200 would graphitise. Related forms are SB-162 for plate, sheet and strip, SB-163 for condenser and heat-exchanger tubes, SB-366 for fittings, and SB-564 for forgings.

The commercial decision between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 is driven almost entirely by service temperature. Below the graphitisation range, Nickel 200 is adequate and costs less to produce. Above it, Nickel 201 is mandatory because the low carbon content prevents graphite nodule formation at grain boundaries, which is the mechanism that causes intergranular cracking in Nickel 200 at elevated temperature.

Size Range and Condition

SB-161 covers cold-worked seamless pipe and tube in the annealed condition, with permissible diameter, wall thickness, length, and straightness variations specified in the standard, plus separate provisions for small-diameter tube ordered to a specified wall thickness. For condenser and heat-exchanger applications, SB-163 is the dedicated specification for seamless nickel alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes, with its own dimensional and test requirements.

Applications

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 seamless pipe and tube are specified in chlor-alkali plants for brine, caustic, and chlorine handling lines, in sodium hydroxide and potash caustic concentration and evaporation systems, in hydrogen process piping where embrittlement must be avoided, and in the production of ketones, acids, and organic intermediates where contamination control matters. Nickel 201 is additionally used in heat-treating furnace atmosphere lines above the graphitisation threshold.

Certification and Inspection

Material is supplied with a mill test certificate to ASME SB-161 including heat number, chemical analysis, mechanical properties, and dimensions. Hydrostatic or nondestructive electric testing is available, along with eddy current, ultrasonic, and intergranular corrosion testing. Certificates in accordance with EN 10204 3.1 can be issued on request, and third-party inspection can be witnessed at the works.

Ordering Information

When requesting a quotation please specify: grade (Nickel 200 / N02200 or Nickel 201 / N02201), product form (seamless pipe or seamless tube), outside diameter and wall thickness or schedule, length, quantity, destination port, and any required testing or third-party inspection. We will confirm current stock and production lead time, and quote FOB Hefei, China in USD.
