Inconel 601 (UNS N06601) nickel-chromium-iron-aluminium alloy supplied to ASME SB-167 seamless pipe and tube, SB-168 plate, sheet and strip, and SB-166 bar and rod. Aluminium content of 1.0-1.7% delivers high-temperature oxidation resistance for furnace internals, heat-treatment fixtures, radiant tubes and kiln components.
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium-iron-aluminium alloy built for sustained high-temperature service where oxidation and carburisation attack conventional stainless steels and lower nickel alloys. The aluminium content of 1.0 to 1.7% forms a protective alumina scale during heating, which is why 601 is the standard selection for furnace internals, radiant tubes, heat-treatment baskets, kiln parts and catalytic converter substrates rather than for pressure-retaining piping alone.
Three product specifications apply depending on the form you order, all within ASME BPVC Section II Part B:
| Product Form | ASME Specification | UNS Designation |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless pipe and tube | SB-167 | N06601 |
| Plate, sheet and strip | SB-168 | N06601 |
| Bar and rod | SB-166 | N06601 |
| Forging stock | SB-564 | confirmed at order enquiry |
| Forged flanges | SB-462 | confirmed at order enquiry |
Note that N06601 is not listed in ASME SB-366 Table 2, which is the wrought nickel-alloy fittings specification. If you need forged or butt-weld elbows, tees and reducers in 601, confirm availability with our technical department before ordering.
| Grade | UNS | Aluminium | Chromium | Typical Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 600 | N06600 | — | 14.0–17.0 | General corrosion and heat resistance |
| Inconel 601 | N06601 | 1.0–1.7 | 21.0–25.0 | Oxidising furnace atmosphere up to ~1,100 °C |
| Inconel 602CA | N06625 | 0.20–0.80 | 17.0–21.0 | Creep strength, not oxidation alone |
| Inconel 690 | N06690 | — | 27.0–31.0 | Sulphur-bearing and aggressive process gas |
The key distinction between 600 and 601 is the aluminium addition. 600 relies on chromium for its oxide scale; 601 relies on an alumina-rich scale that performs markedly better in high-temperature oxidising and carburising atmospheres. In sulfurous or nitrogen-bearing atmospheres at elevated temperature, Inconel 690 (N06690) is usually the better choice.
| Parameter | Specification Basis | Typical Supply Range |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe OD | ASME B36.19M | 1/8 in. to 4 in. (supplier confirmation above 4 in.) |
| Wall thickness | SB-167 product analysis | Schedule 5S to Schedule 80 |
| Plate thickness | SB-168 Table 1 | 3/16 in. and over hot-rolled; 0.018 in. to 0.250 in. cold-rolled sheet |
| Sheet thickness | SB-168 Table 1 | 0.018 in. to 0.250 in. (0.46 to 6.35 mm) |
| Strip thickness | SB-168 Table 1 | 0.005 in. to 0.250 in. (0.13 to 6.35 mm) |
| Bar and rod | SB-166 | Round, square, hexagonal and cold-worked wire |
| Condition | SB-167 / SB-168 | Hot-rolled annealed, cold-worked annealed or solution annealed |
| Specification | Condition | Tensile Strength min. | Yield (0.2%) min. | Elongation min. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SB-168 plate, sheet, strip | Annealed | 80,000 psi (550 MPa) | 30,000 psi (205 MPa) | 30% |
| SB-167 pipe and tube | Cold-worked or hot-worked annealed, all sizes | 80,000 psi (550 MPa) | per SB-167 Table 2 | per SB-167 |
Composition per SB-167 Table 1 for Alloy N06601:
| Element | Composition Limit, % |
|---|---|
| Nickel | remainder |
| Iron | remainder |
| Chromium | 21.0–25.0 |
| Aluminium | 1.0–1.7 |
| Manganese | 1.5 max |
| Copper | 1.0 max |
| Carbon | 0.10 max |
Nickel and iron are both designated as the balance element for N06601 in SB-167 Table 1; the exact balance split is confirmed by the certificate of conformity at the time of order.
