Monel 400 Plate, Sheet and Strip

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper alloy supplied as rolled plate, sheet and strip under ASME SB-127. For buyers who have already specified the alloy, the practical questions are thickness range, product form, edge condition and whether mill test certification is required. This page sets out exactly what SB-127 covers and where the boundaries of the specification sit.

What Monel 400 Is Used For

Monel 400 derives its corrosion resistance from a high nickel content combined with copper. The alloy is specified where reducing acids, alkalis, salt solutions and seawater are present, and where chloride stress-corrosion cracking is the governing failure mode. Typical service includes deaerator and boiler feedwater systems, crude oil and vacuum distillation units, brine and seawater handling, paper and pulp processing, and sulphuric acid service.

Monel 400 is a solid-solution strengthened alloy. It is not precipitation hardened and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. For higher strength, Monel K-500 (UNS N05500) is the age-hardenable variant supplied to a different specification. If your design calls for a higher allowable stress, specify K-500 rather than attempting to heat treat 400.

Grade Comparison

Alloy 20 is often considered alongside Monel 400 for sulphuric acid duty, but the two are not interchangeable: Alloy 20 is copper-rich with chromium added for sulphuric acid resistance, whereas Monel 400 is nickel-rich and performs in reducing conditions. Confirm the governing environment before substituting.

Product Forms and Thickness Range

SB-127 defines the deliverable forms and thickness bands. These ranges come directly from the specification and define what we can roll to order.

Material under 48 in. (1219 mm) in width may be supplied as sheet or strip if the mechanical properties for the ordered condition are met. Material between 3/16 and 1/4 in. (4.8 to 6.4 mm) in thickness may be furnished as sheet rather than plate. If your drawing specifies plate at a thickness inside that band, confirm the product form on the order.

Chemical Composition (ASME SB-127)

Nickel is determined arithmetically by difference. If your project requires supplementary requirements beyond the base specification, state them explicitly on the inquiry.

Mechanical Properties

SB-127 Table 3 lists the room-temperature tensile requirement for annealed material. For quarter-hard cold-rolled strip the specification gives a separate requirement set: tensile strength 78,000 to 85,000 psi (538 to 586 MPa), yield strength 45,000 psi (310 MPa) minimum by 0.2 % offset, and elongation of 20 % minimum in 2 in. (50 mm) or 4D. Other cold-worked conditions are supplied to the values agreed at time of order, so tell us the temper you need rather than assuming annealed.

Applicable Specifications

Plate, sheet and strip dimensions and tolerances follow the applicable ASME B20.2 subtable for the ordered thickness and width band.

Inspection and Documentation

Standard mill test certification includes chemical analysis, tensile and hardness results, heat number, and product dimensions. For pressure-vessel and sour-service installations we can supply low-sulphur content control, ultrasonic testing, and full material traceability on request. Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 can be specified as a supplementary requirement where the service environment is aggressive. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV or Lloyd’s is welcome; please state the inspection body in your inquiry so the mill can schedule it.
