Incoloy 800, 800H and 800HT are nickel-iron-chromium alloys supplied as plate, sheet and strip for high-temperature service. The three grades differ in grain size and service temperature: N08800 is the general-purpose grade, while N08810 (800H) and N08811 (800HT) are creep- and rupture-resistant grades for service above 1100°F (538°C). This page covers the rolled flat product form manufactured to ASME SB-409.

Specification Coverage

ASME SB-409 covers UNS N08120, N08890, N08800, N08810 and N08811 as rolled plate, sheet and strip. N08800 is normally employed up to 1100°F (593°C), while N08810, N08811 and N08120 are employed above 1100°F (538°C) where creep and rupture resistance is required, and are annealed to develop a controlled grain size. General tolerances follow ASME B906. For tubular and bar forms see SB-407 and SB-408; for forgings see SB-564 and SB-462.

Alloy 800H (comparison)N0881030.0-35.019.0-23.039.5 minSame composition family, grain-size controlled

The three share essentially the same composition envelope; what separates them is grain size and creep behaviour. If a drawing says “Incoloy 800” without a suffix, confirm which.

Mechanical Properties (ASME SB-409 Table 3)

The annealed tensile strength of N08810 and N08811 (65 000 psi) is lower than N08800 (75 000 psi) despite similar compositions, following from the larger annealed grain size required for creep resistance.

Heat Treatment and Grain Size

SB-409 paragraph 8.4 specifies N08120 annealed at 2150°F (1177°C) minimum and N08810 at 2050°F (1121°C) minimum. Paragraph 8.2 requires annealed alloys N08120, N08810, N08811 and N08890 to conform to an average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser.

Product Forms and Size Range

SB-409 Table 1 defines the product ranges against the ASME B906 dimensional tables: hot-rolled plate 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) and over; hot-rolled sheet and cold-rolled sheet 0.018 to 0.250 in. (0.46 to 6.4 mm) inclusive; cold-rolled strip 0.005 to 0.250 in. (0.13 to 6.4 mm) inclusive. Material between 3/16 and 1/4 in. (4.8 and 6.4 mm) may be furnished as sheet or plate provided it meets the condition ordered. Plate up to 2 in. (50.8 mm) thick follows B906 Table A3.1 for thickness and overweight tolerance, taken at 0.287 lb/in.³ (7.944 g/cm³); thicker plate follows Table A3.2.

Applications

  • Heat treatment furnaces: baskets, retorts and radiant tubes
  • Steam and superheated steam piping, esp. 800H and 800HT
  • Process furnace internals
  • Automotive exhaust and catalytic converter components
  • Chemical processing equipment needing oxidation resistance and stability
  • Food and pharmaceutical equipment

Certification and Inspection

Material is supplied with a mill test certificate per EN 10204 3.1 unless otherwise specified. Available inspection items include:

  • Full chemical analysis and product (check) analysis on request
  • Tensile testing with test reports, and grain size determination
  • Dimensional inspection against the applicable B906 tables
  • Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 where required
  • Non-destructive examination including ultrasonic and eddy current testing
  • Third-party inspection by an internationally recognised agency
