Alloy 30 (UNS N06030) Butt Weld Fittings, Plate and Bar

Alloy 30 (UNS N06030) is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum-copper alloy supplied as butt weld fittings to ASME SB-366 and B16.9, plate, sheet and strip to SB-582, and welded tube to SB-626. It is the general-purpose member of the Hastelloy G family, combining broad acid resistance with good fabricating formability.

Alloy 30, often referenced as Hastelloy G-30, belongs to the nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum-copper family that includes Alloy G (UNS N06007) and Alloy G-3 (UNS N06985). This family was developed to give stainless-class handling of the common reducing acids — sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric — with the addition of copper for improved resistance to non-oxidising acids, at a lower alloy cost than the pure nickel-molybdenum C series.

ASME SB-366 Table 2 lists N06030 under the WP designation WPHG30, confirming the wrought route. Alloy 30 is also listed in ASME SB-582 Table 1 and ASME SB-626 Table 1 for plate and welded tube respectively.

Grade Comparison Within the G Family

GradeUNSCrMoCuPosition in Family
Alloy GN0600721.0–23.55.5–7.51.5–2.5Original general acid grade
Alloy 30 (G-30)N0603021.0–23.55.5–7.51.5–2.5Lower carbon, tighter control
Alloy G-3N0698521.0–23.55.5–7.51.5–2.5Higher strength variant
Alloy C-276N1027616.0–18.015.0–17.0—Molybdenum-dominant, broader envelope

The G family shares the same nominal Cr-Mo-Cu envelope; the grades differ mainly in carbon control, mechanical properties and specific test requirements. Alloy 30 is generally chosen when a moderate molybdenum level is sufficient and full C-276 performance is not required, giving better availability and cost.

Chemical Composition

Per ASME SB-582 Table 1 for the Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo-Cu family including N06030:

ElementComposition Limit, %
Nickelremainder
Chromium21.0–23.5
Iron18.0–21.0
Molybdenum5.5–7.5
Copper1.5–2.5
Manganese1.0–2.0
Cobalt2.5 max
Carbon0.05 max
Tungsten1.0 max
Silicon1.0 max
Phosphorus0.04 max
Sulfur0.03 max

Note that the family specification covers UNS N06007, N06975, N06985 and N06030. Where a specific grade requires an element limit tighter than the family value — for example niobium plus tantalum addition control — that will appear on your certificate of conformity. Please send us the exact grade and product form so we can confirm the applicable column.

ASME SB-582 Table 2 sets the minimum thickness and yield strength for N06030 plate. For material 3/16 in. (4.76 mm) and over in thickness, the minimum yield strength for N06030 is 85 ksi. For thickness under 3/16 in. the plate is supplied as sheet or strip under the same specification.

Applications

  • Sulphuric and hydrochloric acid handling systems
  • Phosphoric acid and fertiliser production equipment
  • Pickling lines and acid regeneration plants
  • Pulp and paper chemical recovery
  • Marine and offshore seawater handling where Mo/Cu balance suits the duty
  • General chemical process piping where full C-series alloys are not economical

Inspection and Testing

  • EN 10204 3.1 certification, 3.2 available on request
  • Solution annealing per SB-366 Table 3 with heat-treatment charts
