Inconel 625 and Alloy 6219 are nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys supplied as plate, sheet and strip. Both are solid solution strengthened with no age-hardening treatment, and are used where chloride corrosion and high-temperature strength are needed together. This page covers the rolled flat product form to ASME SB-443, including the 625 Grade 1 and 2 distinction.

Specification Coverage

ASME SB-443 covers rolled nickel-chromium-molybdenum-columbium alloy UNS N06625 and nickel-chromium-molybdenum-silicon alloy UNS N06219 as plate, sheet and strip. Tolerances follow ASME B906. Matching forms:

  • SB-444 — cold-worked seamless pipe and tube
  • SB-446 — rod, bar, wire
  • SB-366 — wrought fittings, where N06625 carries its own Grade 1 and 2 provisions
  • SB-462 — forged flanges and fittings
  • SB-704 — welded N06625, N06219 and N08825 tubes

Inconel 600N0660072.0 min14.0-17.0———Higher Ni, no Mo

Alloy 6219 trades roughly 13 percentage points of nickel for 0.7-1.1% silicon. Against Inconel 600, the 8-10% molybdenum raises pitting resistance substantially.

Niobium plus tantalum stabilises 625, while silicon strengthens 6219. Iron is 5.0% maximum in 625 and 2.0-4.0% in 6219.

Mechanical Properties (ASME SB-443 Table 3)

N06219All plate, sheet and stripSolution annealed96 (660)39 (270)30

Grade 1 is annealed at 1600°F (871°C) minimum; Grade 2 is solution annealed, giving lower tensile and yield figures with greater ductility. Grade 1 cold-rolled sheet and strip, at 120 ksi (827 MPa) tensile, is the strongest condition.

Grade 1 versus Grade 2

The split matters when a design relies on minimum strength. Grade 2 suits pressure vessel fabrication, welding and forming, and is what most suppliers supply when no grade is stated. State the grade explicitly if the design needs Grade 1.

Product Forms and Size Range

SB-443 Table 1 gives the product ranges against ASME B906 tables: hot-rolled plate 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) and over; cold-rolled plate 3/16 to 3/8 in. (4.8 to 9.5 mm) inclusive; hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet 0.018 to 0.250 in. (0.46 to 6.4 mm) inclusive; cold-rolled strip 0.005 to 0.250 in. (0.13 to 6.4 mm) inclusive. Material between 3/16 and 1/4 in. (4.8 and 6.4 mm) may be furnished as sheet or plate provided it meets the condition ordered.

Applications

  • Chemical process vessels and columns
  • Seawater desalination and brine handling
  • Flue gas desulphurisation absorbers
