Inconel 617 (UNS N06617) is a nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy supplied as SB-167 seamless pipe and tube, SB-168 plate, sheet and strip, and SB-564 bar. The 10.0-15.0% cobalt and 8.0-10.0% molybdenum combination gives exceptional creep strength and ammonia resistance at temperatures up to about 1,000 °C.
Inconel 617 is a solid-solution nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy developed for service where both mechanical strength and environmental resistance are demanded at the same time. Because it is not precipitation hardened, it retains dimensional stability and creep resistance in the 700 to 1,000 °C band, which makes it the default choice for ammonia synthesis converters, supercritical steam superheaters, nuclear steam generators and high-temperature furnace internals.
| Product Form | ASME Specification | UNS Designation |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless pipe and tube | SB-167 | N06617 |
| Plate, sheet and strip | SB-168 | N06617 |
| Bar, rod and wire | SB-166 | N06617 |
| Bar and forging stock | SB-564 | N06617 |
| Welded tube | SB-626 | N06617 |
As with Inconel 601, UNS N06617 does not appear in ASME SB-366 Table 2 for wrought fittings. For forged fittings and flanges we will confirm the applicable route at enquiry stage.
| Grade | UNS | Cobalt | Molybdenum | Distinguishing Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 600 | N06600 | — | — | General purpose Ni-Cr-Fe |
| Inconel 601 | N06601 | — | — | 1.0–1.7% Al for oxidation resistance |
| Inconel 617 | N06617 | 10.0–15.0 | 8.0–10.0 | Creep strength plus N and carburisation resistance |
| Inconel 625 | N06625 | — | — | Nb-stabilised, seawater and sour service |
Cobalt is what separates 617 from the 600/601 family. It raises the solidus temperature and slows grain-boundary diffusion, which is why 617 is specified for ammonia synthesis internals where nitrogen attack and creep coexist. Molybdenum at 8.0 to 10.0% adds pitting resistance that600/601 do not provide.
Per SB-167 Table 1, Alloy N06617:
| Element | Composition Limit, % |
|---|---|
| Nickel | 58.0 min |
| Chromium | 20.0–24.0 |
| Cobalt | 10.0–15.0 |
| Molybdenum | 8.0–10.0 |
| Aluminium | 0.8–1.5 |
| Iron | 3.0 max |
| Manganese | 1.0 max |
| Copper | 0.5 max |
| Carbon | 0.05–0.15 |
| Specification | Condition | Tensile min. | Yield (0.2%) min. | Elongation min. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SB-168 plate/sheet/strip | Annealed | 94,000 psi (650 MPa) | 43,000 psi (300 MPa) | 25% |
| SB-167 pipe and tube | Hot-worked or cold-worked annealed, all sizes | 94,000 psi (650 MPa) | per SB-167 Table 2 | per SB-167 |
| SB-564 bar | Refer to SB-564 Table | Refer to SB-564 | Refer to SB-564 | Refer to SB-564 |
Note the difference in the table: SB-168 gives 43,000 psi (300 MPa) yield for 617, while SB-167 reports tensile on a minimum basis. Where both a tensile and a ductility value matter to your design, specify which product form governs and we will certify against that specification.
| Parameter | Basis | Typical Supply Range |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe OD and wall | ASME B36.19M | 1/8 in. to 4 in. OD; confirm larger sizes |
| Plate thickness | SB-168 Table 1 | 3/16 in. and over hot-rolled |
| Sheet and strip | SB-168 Table 1 | Sheet 0.018 in. to 0.250 in.; strip 0.005 in. to 0.250 in. |
| Bar, rod, wire | SB-166 / SB-564 | Round, square, hexagonal, cold-worked wire |
| Condition | SB-167 / SB-168 | Hot-rolled annealed, cold-worked annealed, solution annealed |
