Inconel 601 (UNS N06601) Seamless Pipe, Plate, Sheet and Bar

Inconel 601 (UNS N06601) nickel-chromium-iron-aluminium alloy supplied to ASME SB-167 seamless pipe and tube, SB-168 plate, sheet and strip, and SB-166 bar and rod. Aluminium content of 1.0-1.7% delivers high-temperature oxidation resistance for furnace internals, heat-treatment fixtures, radiant tubes and kiln components.

Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium-iron-aluminium alloy built for sustained high-temperature service where oxidation and carburisation attack conventional stainless steels and lower nickel alloys. The aluminium content of 1.0 to 1.7% forms a protective alumina scale during heating, which is why 601 is the standard selection for furnace internals, radiant tubes, heat-treatment baskets, kiln parts and catalytic converter substrates rather than for pressure-retaining piping alone.

Specification Coverage

Three product specifications apply depending on the form you order, all within ASME BPVC Section II Part B:

Product FormASME SpecificationUNS Designation
Seamless pipe and tubeSB-167N06601
Plate, sheet and stripSB-168N06601
Bar and rodSB-166N06601
Forging stockSB-564confirmed at order enquiry
Forged flangesSB-462confirmed at order enquiry

Note that N06601 is not listed in ASME SB-366 Table 2, which is the wrought nickel-alloy fittings specification. If you need forged or butt-weld elbows, tees and reducers in 601, confirm availability with our technical department before ordering.

Grade Comparison

GradeUNSAluminiumChromiumTypical Position
Inconel 600N06600—14.0–17.0General corrosion and heat resistance
Inconel 601N066011.0–1.721.0–25.0Oxidising furnace atmosphere up to ~1,100 °C
Inconel 602CAN066250.20–0.8017.0–21.0Creep strength, not oxidation alone
Inconel 690N06690—27.0–31.0Sulphur-bearing and aggressive process gas

The key distinction between 600 and 601 is the aluminium addition. 600 relies on chromium for its oxide scale; 601 relies on an alumina-rich scale that performs markedly better in high-temperature oxidising and carburising atmospheres. In sulfurous or nitrogen-bearing atmospheres at elevated temperature, Inconel 690 (N06690) is usually the better choice.
