UNS N06650 is the nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten member of the ASME Section II bar and rod specifications, supplied under SB-446. It is often described as the tungsten-bearing counterpart to Alloy 625 and is chosen where elevated-temperature strength and resistance to hot sulphuric and oxidising acids are both required. Common uses include spring and fastener components, high-temperature shafting, valve trim, and heat-treating fixtures that see both mechanical loading and corrosive atmosphere. Because it is a wrought bar grade rather than a fitting grade, most buyers purchase it either as finished bar stock or as forging stock for parts they machine themselves.

Product range

Bar is supplied hot-worked and cold-worked to the conditions in ASME SB-446 Table 1, in round and flat form, to diameter or thickness ranges from 8 mm up to 300 mm and above on request. Forging-quality material can be furnished to chemical requirements and surface inspection only, since no tensile properties are required; forging stock is typically supplied in the hot-worked condition. We can also supply saw-cut blanks, forged billets, and machined components produced from customer drawings or from our own models.

Composition per ASME SB-446 Table 2. The tungsten addition is the reason N06650 shows higher strength and higher density than Alloy 625 while retaining comparable corrosion resistance.

Property per ASME SB-446 Table 1. For comparison, N06625 Grade 1 annealed up to 4 in. (102 mm) requires 120 ksi (827 MPa) tensile and 60 ksi (414 MPa) yield with 30% elongation, and N06219 solution annealed requires 96 ksi (660 MPa) and 39 ksi (270 MPa) with 50% elongation. The elongation figures differ because the specification sets them per grade, so the strength comparison should be made on tensile and yield only.

Heat treatment

N06650 is supplied solution annealed. Alloy 625 Grade 1 for comparison is annealed at 1600 °F (871 °C) minimum and Grade 2 is solution annealed at 2000 °F (1093 °C) minimum, with an optional stabilisation anneal at 1800 °F (982 °C) minimum to increase resistance to sensitisation. For N06650 bar, please specify the required condition on the enquiry so we can supply to the correct anneal.

Applications

High-temperature spring and bolting components, valve trim and stems, furnace furniture and heat-treating fixtures, chemical injection and metering valve parts, oil and gas downhole and completion components, and machined parts where high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance are both required.

Certification and inspection

EN 10204 3.1 certification with full heat analysis, ultrasonic testing for internal defects, macro-etch and surface inspection for forged stock, hardness and dimensional verification against the applicable bar standard, and PMI confirmation on finished parts. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 sour-service qualification can be supplied on request.

Ordering information

Please specify the diameter or thickness, condition (hot-worked, cold-worked or solution annealed), grade N06650, quantity, length requirement, and destination port. If you need forged blanks, machined parts or cut-to-length material, please send a drawing with tolerances and the finished surface finish so we can quote the full process chain in one step.
